Eastern Tent Caterpillar

April 29, 2020

Pest of the Month

This pest is primarily found in crabapples and cherries. They make their tents in the crotches of the branches and on warm days, generally starting in April, will emerge from the web and feed on the expanding foliage. Damage can range from light to heavy defoliation. This caterpillar is dark and moderately hairy with a distinct white stripe down the length of their bodies. The egg mass of this pest can be found on the twigs and appears as a dark glistening knot almost resembling blown glass. Each egg mass can contain 150 to 350 eggs. The egg masses are small, but if you can locate and reach them, they can be pruned out to help control this pest. We also have several registered pesticides that can be sprayed to help control this pest and reduce the foliar damage they can cause your trees.
